9 Gentle Self Care Reminders When You’re Tapped Out

We don’t always realize we’re burned out until our bodies—or emotions—force us to stop. The thing is, self-care isn’t always a fancy spa day or green juice. Sometimes, it’s just pausing long enough to check in with yourself and say, “How am I really doing?”

If you’re someone who gives a lot—to your job, your family, your friends—this post is for you. These 9 self-care and mental health reminders are here to gently nudge you back to yourself. Because the truth is: burnout doesn’t make you weak, it makes you human. And self-care? It’s how we get back home to ourselves.

1. Self-care is practicing habits that promote a healthy lifestyle—mentally, physically, and emotionally.

It’s not all or nothing. It’s little by little. Whether it’s drinking more water, taking a walk, journaling before bed, or unplugging from social media—daily habits stack up and shift how you show up in the world. 3 SELF CARE MOMENTS FROM LAST WEEK

2. Self-care is protecting your personal space, energy, and time when others are requiring too much.

You’re allowed to say no. You’re allowed to unplug. Protecting your peace is not selfish—it’s sacred.

3. Boundaries are easy to create, but communicating and maintaining them? That’s the real work.

It might feel awkward or hard at first, but setting (and upholding) boundaries is a form of self-respect. You teach people how to treat you by what you allow, what you stop, and what you walk away from.

4. Following your gut and doing what feels right to you is self-care.

Even when others don’t understand. Even when it’s scary. Your intuition knows the way—trust it.

5. Listening to your inner voice is self-care.

We live in a world with a lot of noise—everyone has an opinion. But your inner voice is your compass. Get quiet enough to hear it.

6. Self-care is acknowledging and not avoiding the things that make you feel better.

That thing you’ve been meaning to do—the walk, the therapist appointment, the break from toxic people—it matters. Don’t keep putting it off. You’re worth the effort.

7. Giving yourself just 5 minutes in the morning can set your entire day on a better track.

Before checking texts or emails, try breathing deeply, stretching, praying, or journaling. That small pause gives your mind a moment to align before the day demands so much of you.

8. Correcting your negative self-talk and giving yourself a pep talk is real self-love.

Talk to yourself like you would your best friend. Kindness isn’t just for others—it’s for you, too.

9. You’re not lazy—you’ve just been giving too much of yourself to things that no longer serve you.

Take that in. Repeat it. You are not lazy. You are drained. There’s a difference. Give yourself permission to rest, reassess, and realign.

You don’t need to overhaul your life overnight. Start with one small reminder, one small change. Let your self-care evolve with you.

You deserve to feel good—mentally, emotionally, spiritually. And even if no one else tells you this today: I see you, I get it, and I’m cheering for you.

Never Take Your Foot Off the Gas: Self-Care is a Lifestyle

When it comes to self-care, we often think of it as something we turn to during tough times. But the real secret is never taking your foot off the gas—even when life is going well. Self-care is more than an occasional activity; it’s a lifestyle and a way of being. It’s in the daily habits and practices that keep you grounded, balanced, and aligned with yourself.

cozy cafe setting with inspirational notepad

We all have those moments when things seem to be running smoothly, and it’s easy to get relaxed, thinking we don’t need to focus on self-care as much. But that’s actually when you should ramp it up—not slow down. When life feels good, it’s the perfect time to express gratitude, give back, and prioritize your needs. That way, when life throws you a curveball, you’re already in alignment with yourself, and the challenges don’t knock you off course as easily.

Keep Your Self-Care Simple

Self-care doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. In fact, it works best when you keep it simple. During a recent conversation with my mom, we were talking about how we tend to care for ourselves when we’re sick. When you’re sick and go to the hospital, what do they do? They give you an IV for fluids, put you on a bland diet, and tell you to rest. Simple, right? So why wait for a health scare to take care of yourself?

Let’s think of daily self-care as the maintenance plan for your well-being. Drink your water. Get enough sleep. Log off when you need to. Listen to your body, nourish it with colorful foods, and laugh often. Take time for fresh air, read a good book, and do it all over again the next day.

Self-Care as a Way of Being

When self-care becomes a lifestyle, you’re not just responding to problems—you’re building confidence and courage . You’re investing in your emotional, mental, and physical health before you’re in a place of crisis. This is how you stay in alignment with who you are, even when life gets unpredictable.

The idea is to create small, consistent practices that become part of your everyday life. Whether things are going well or not, your foundation of self-care remains strong. You’ll be more equipped to handle stress, setbacks, and unexpected challenges with grace and calmness. SETBACKS, REJECTIONS, AND STUMBLING BLOCKS ARE NECESSARY FOR GROWTH

So, as you move through your week, don’t take your foot off the gas. Keep doing the little things that support your well-being. When you stay on track with your self-care, you’re better prepared for whatever comes your way.

Remember: Self-care is a lifestyle, not a luxury. Keep it simple, stay consistent, and prioritize yourself—because you’re worth it.

Transform Your Mindset: From Fear to Relief

Recently, my mom was preparing for surgery, and as you can imagine, she was feeling nervous, scared, and anxious. It’s a natural response to the unknown, especially when it involves something as big as surgery. But in those moments of fear, I reminded her of something important: think about the relief you’re going to feel afterward. The pain that has been weighing her down would be gone, and she could finally return to her normal life, free from the discomfort. Focusing on the outcome rather than the challenge itself shifted her mindset, and it was a powerful reminder of how we can all manage adversity.

handwritten text on paper and crumpled notes

When we’re faced with challenges—whether it’s a health scare, personal loss, or a difficult situation at work—it’s easy to dwell on the fear, anxiety, and discomfort. Our minds tend to fixate on the obstacles in front of us. But what if, instead, we redirected our focus to the potential positive outcomes? What if we saw adversity as a stepping stone toward something better?

Redirecting our mindset isn’t about ignoring the hard stuff. It’s about acknowledging it while also giving ourselves the gift of optimism. By focusing on the light at the end of the tunnel, we can not only protect our mental health but also improve our physical well-being.

When we face challenges, our minds can easily spiral into negative thinking. Thoughts like “What if this goes wrong?” or “How am I going to get through this?” dominate our mental space. And while it’s normal to feel this way, constantly focusing on the negative can take a toll on our mental and physical health. Stress and anxiety become heightened, making it even harder to move forward. The Power of Language: How Your Words Shape Your Mindset

But shifting your perspective—redirecting your focus to the potential benefits or relief you’ll experience—can transform your mindset. It’s not about dismissing the difficulty of the situation, but about reminding yourself that adversity is often temporary, and positive outcomes are possible.

When we dwell on the negatives, our bodies respond with physical symptoms. Stress can lead to headaches, muscle tension, and even impact our immune system. On the other hand, focusing on positive outcomes can reduce stress and anxiety, leading to improved physical and mental health.

Redirecting your focus in moments of adversity helps you to:

  • Reduce anxiety: By focusing on positive outcomes, your mind can break free from the cycle of worry and find a sense of calm.
  • Enhance resilience: Optimism fuels resilience. The more you practice focusing on the good that can come from challenges, the stronger your ability to bounce back.
  • Improve overall well-being: Positive thinking reduces stress hormones and improves mental clarity, making you feel more empowered and in control.

Facing adversity is a part of life, but how we handle it can make all the difference. By redirecting your focus to the positives—whether it’s the relief on the other side of surgery, the growth that comes from struggle, or the lessons learned from difficult times—you can protect your mental and physical health.

The next time you find yourself in a challenging situation, take a deep breath and ask yourself, “What good can come from this?” You might be surprised at how a small shift in perspective can make a big difference in how you feel.

Remember: adversity is temporary, but the strength and resilience you gain from overcoming it will last a lifetime. You’ve got this.

What Do You Do the Most In? Let’s Celebrate Our “Extra” Moments!

I recently stumbled upon a hilarious YouTube short where a woman was celebrating her 46th birthday by reflecting on what she does “the most” in her life. She humorously listed her top priorities: getting her nails done, hitting the gym, and cooking her own meals to manage her autoimmune disease. It got me thinking, what do I do the most in my life? FINDING JOY IN THE LITTLE THINGS

stainless steel mini shopping cart with nail polish bottles

Turns out, I have quite a few things I go all out for. Here’s a fun rundown of my top “extra” moments:

1. Skincare Routine

My skincare routine is definitely where I do the most. I have a regimented process that involves more steps than a dance routine. Cleansing, toning, serums, moisturizers, face masks—you name it, I do it. My bathroom shelf looks like a mini Sephora, and I love every minute of it. If there were an Olympic event for skincare, I’d be going for gold!

2. Daily Walks and Workouts

My daily walk or workout is my mental sanctuary. It’s not just about staying fit; it’s my escape from the hustle and bustle. Whether it’s staying home and hitting the treadmill or going outside to the park or trail, I make sure I sweat it out every day. I try to couple my walk with some strength training a couple days a week to help me with an unwanted friend named Peri! If you know her then you get it, if not, ladies, you’ll meet her eventually.

3. Press-On Nails

Lately, I’ve been doing the most with press-on nails. My daughter and I love the versatility, options, and styles we are able to choose from. Eliminating the worry of polish chipping has been amazing. Every week, I have a new set that matches my mood or the season. My hands have never looked more fabulous! Thanks to Amazon you can get some really good ones on a budget.

4. Experimenting with New Recipes

I’ve really been going all out in the kitchen. For health reasons I’ve looked to increase my palette and thus getting more creative with food. Eating primarily vegetables and fruits has helped me on a daily basis and allow me to feel better. I seem to enjoy food content more than anything as of late. Who knew cooking could be this exciting?

5. Indulging in Lattes

And yes, I absolutely love getting a good latte. There’s something about that creamy, caffeinated goodness that makes my day. A good coffee date with my husband is always top tier for me.

What Do You Do the Most In?

We all have our “extra” moments—those things we pour our hearts and energy into, no matter how over-the-top they might seem. So, what do you do the most in? Is it your shoe collection, makeup routine, tech gadgets, sports, or maybe your love for fashion?

Let’s celebrate the little things that make us uniquely ourselves. Whether it’s indulging in self-care, pursuing a hobby with passion, or simply loving a good latte, embrace what you do the most. Life is too short not to be a little extra!

Celebrating International Self-Care Day: Simple Ways to Take Care of Yourself

July 24 is International Self-Care Day, a perfect reminder to prioritize your well-being and take care of yourself. Self-care doesn’t have to be elaborate or time-consuming; sometimes, the simplest acts can have the most profound impact. Here’s how I like to keep my self-care routine simple and effective, focusing on feeling good inside and out, making others feel good, and maintaining a welcoming home filled with good food and laughter.

Self-care is essential for maintaining physical, mental, and emotional health. It’s about taking the time to nurture yourself, reduce stress, and enhance your overall well-being. On International Self-Care Day, let’s take a moment to reflect on how we can incorporate simple self-care practices into our daily lives.

Simple Self-Care Practices for July 24

Here are some ways you can participate in self-care today:

**1. Feel Good Inside and Out

Start your day with activities that make you feel good both physically and mentally. This could be a morning stretch, a short workout, or simply spending a few moments in meditation. Nourish your body with a healthy breakfast and drink plenty of water throughout the day. Remember, self-care is about listening to your body and giving it what it needs to thrive.

**2. Make Others Feel Good

Self-care also involves spreading positivity to those around you. Compliment a friend, help a neighbor, or spend quality time with your family. Making others feel good can boost your own happiness and create a positive ripple effect in your community.

**3. Maintain a Clutter-Free, Inviting Home

A clutter-free, pleasant-smelling home can do wonders for your mental state. Take some time today to tidy up your space. Light a scented candle or use essential oils to create a calming atmosphere. A clean, organized home can be a sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation.

**4. Enjoy Good Food

Prepare a delicious meal for yourself and your loved ones. Cooking can be a therapeutic activity, and sharing a meal can strengthen bonds. Choose recipes that are both nutritious and enjoyable, and savor the experience of eating together.

**5. Embrace Laughter

Laughter is a powerful form of self-care. Watch a funny movie, share jokes with friends, or play a game that brings joy to your household. Laughter reduces stress, boosts your immune system, and can improve your mood instantly.

How I Celebrate Self-Care

On International Self-Care Day, I like to keep my routine simple yet fulfilling:

Morning Routine: I start my day with a skincare routine that makes me feel good. Taking my time going through my routine gives me the couple minutes of “me time” needed before giving myself to my family for the day. This sets a positive tone for the rest of the day.

Spreading Positivity: I make it a point to have a moment of silence to ensure I’m emotionally present. Spend time in prayer and meditation. Listening to my usual motivational videos during breakfast to provide some nuggets of inspiration throughout the day.

Home Atmosphere: I will spend my usual hour a day cleaning and doing laundry . Giving myself a time of an hour a day allows me to not get too deep into a project, maintain the daily clutter, and refresh the home to keep our safe space serene.

Healthy Meals: My daily plan will continue in eating as nutritious as possible. Ensuring I’m eating all the colors of the rainbow. Having a healthy protein and fiber intake. Not to mention keeping up with my daily water intake.

Evening Laughter: To end the day, get in some good laughter. Find something funny or interesting to keep you engaged and not take things too seriously.

International Self-Care Day is a wonderful opportunity to prioritize your well-being and incorporate simple, meaningful practices into your routine. By focusing on feeling good inside and out, making others feel good, maintaining a clutter-free home, enjoying good food, and embracing laughter, you can enhance your overall quality of life. Remember, self-care isn’t just for today—make it a regular part of your life and enjoy the lasting benefits.

How will you participate in self-care today? Happy International Self-Care Day!

The Healing Power of Apology: A Vital Aspect of Self-Care

Self-care and healing are often associated with setting boundaries, nurturing oneself, and addressing past traumas. However, an equally important yet sometimes overlooked aspect of self-care is recognizing when we’ve hurt someone and taking the steps to apologize sincerely. Being humble and self-aware enough to offer a heartfelt apology is a profound act of self-love, growth, and emotional maturity.

Apologizing is not just about making amends with others; it’s also about nurturing our own emotional health and integrity. Here’s why recognizing when you’ve hurt someone and offering an apology is essential for self-care and healing:

**1. Fostering Emotional Growth:
Acknowledging our mistakes and the impact of our actions on others is a sign of emotional maturity. It shows that we are willing to take responsibility for our behavior and are committed to personal growth.

**2. Building Trust:
Sincere apologies help to rebuild trust in relationships. When we admit our faults and express genuine remorse, it shows that we value the relationship and are willing to make efforts to restore it.

**3. Healing Wounds:
Apologizing can be a powerful healing tool for both the person who was hurt and the one offering the apology. It can mend emotional wounds and provide closure, allowing both parties to move forward.

**4. Self-Respect:
Taking responsibility for our actions and making amends helps us maintain our self-respect. It’s a reflection of our integrity and commitment to living authentically.

The Power of a Simple Apology

When offering an apology, simplicity and sincerity are key. An apology that includes justifications or explanations can come across as insincere or self-serving. A straightforward and heartfelt apology can make a significant impact. Here’s how to do it:

**1. Acknowledge the Hurt:
Begin by acknowledging the pain you’ve caused. This shows that you understand the impact of your actions. Simply say, “I hurt you and I am sorry.” 5 REASONS VULNERABILITY IS STRENGTH

**2. Express Remorse:
Express genuine remorse for your actions. Let the other person know that you truly regret what you did and the pain it caused them. A simple, “I was wrong” is good.

**3. Ask for Forgiveness:
Request forgiveness without any expectations. It’s important to respect the other person’s feelings and their process of healing. Say, “Please forgive me.”

**4. Listen Actively:
Be prepared to listen to the other person’s feelings and perspective without interrupting or defending yourself. This shows respect and validates their emotions. Bonus note is to know they aren’t obligated to respond or even accept it right away. Be prepared if someone doesn’t want to respond when you do decide to apologize.

Self-care and healing extend beyond personal boundaries and trauma recovery. They also involve recognizing when we’ve hurt someone and having the courage to apologize sincerely. A simple, heartfelt apology can mend emotional wounds, build trust, and foster emotional growth. By practicing humility and self-awareness, we not only nurture our relationships but also enhance our own well-being.

Remember, a genuine apology doesn’t need explanations or justifications. All that needs to be said is, “I hurt you and I am sorry. Please forgive me.” This simple act of humility and compassion can go a long way in your journey of self-care and personal growth.

Simple Saturday Self-Care Agenda: Refresh and Rejuvenate

Saturdays are a perfect time to focus on self-care and rejuvenation. After a long week, taking a day to prioritize your well-being can help you recharge and prepare for the week ahead. Here’s a simple yet effective self-care agenda to make the most of your Saturday. This routine includes drinking plenty of water, deep conditioning your hair, shredding old mail, starting a new book, doing a little more decluttering, and, most importantly, resting.

woman in white long sleeved shirt holding a pen writing on a paper

1. Sleep In a Little

Start your self-care Saturday by allowing yourself to sleep in a little longer than usual. On Saturdays I typically allow my body to gradually wake up. I sleep in a little longer and let my body tell me when to get up. Give your body the extra rest it needs after a busy week. Adequate sleep is essential for physical and mental health, helping to improve mood, boost cognitive function, and increase energy levels. Set no alarm or a later one, and enjoy the luxury of waking up naturally. Sleep has helped me tremendously as I’ve made it a priority.

2. Drink Plenty of Water

Start your day by hydrating your body. Some days I may slack on the amount of water I drink. Typically on Saturday is my day to drink as much as I can. Drinking plenty of water is essential for maintaining good health. It helps flush out toxins, improves skin complexion, boosts energy levels, and supports overall bodily functions. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water throughout the day. To make it more enjoyable, you can infuse your water with slices of lemon, cucumber, or fresh mint. DIY Cucumber Lemon Water GREAT REFRESHER

3. Deep Condition Your Hair

Next on my self-care agenda is to give my hair some TLC with a deep conditioning treatment. After a week of exercise and styling products, your hair deserves some extra TLC. Choose a deep conditioner that suits your hair type, apply it generously, and let it sit for the recommended time. While you wait, you can relax and enjoy a cup of tea. My favorite tea at the moment is Ginger and Honey. This treatment will leave your hair feeling soft, hydrated, and revitalized.

4. Shred Old Mail

Decluttering is a powerful way to clear your mind and create a more organized space. I’m going to spend some time shredding old mail and documents that we no longer need. This simple task not only helps protect your personal information but also reduces clutter. I turn on my oldie but goodie station, get some water, and a snack and shred away. You’ll feel a sense of accomplishment as you see the stack diminish.

5. Start a New Book

There’s nothing quite like getting lost in a good book. I’m working on reading more. Whether you prefer fiction, non-fiction, or self-help, choose a book that interests you and dive in. Reading is a great way to relax, reduce stress, and stimulate your mind. Get comfy, cozy, and relaxed and allow yourself to get absorbed in the story or the knowledge you’re gaining.

6. Do a Little More Decluttering

In addition to shredding old mail, I’m going to tackle a closet to declutter. You don’t have to tackle everything at once; even small steps can make a big difference. Focus on one area, such as your closet, a kitchen drawer, or your bathroom cabinet. Sort through items, decide what to keep, what to donate, and what to throw away. Decluttering helps create a more organized and serene environment, which can positively impact your mental well-being.

7. Rest

Finally, make sure to prioritize rest. After a week of hustle and bustle, your body and mind need time to unwind. Whether it’s taking a nap, meditating, or simply lounging on the couch, give yourself permission to rest without feeling guilty. Resting is crucial for restoring energy, improving mood, and maintaining overall health. Listen to your body and give it the relaxation it deserves.

By following this Saturday self-care agenda, you can create a balanced day of productivity and relaxation. Sleeping in a little, drinking plenty of water, deep conditioning your hair, shredding old mail, starting a new book, doing a little more decluttering, and resting are all simple yet effective ways to take care of yourself. Enjoy your Saturday and remember that self-care is not a luxury, but a necessity for a happy, healthy life. Your self care requirements are different from mine. Do what you need to refresh yourself. Have a great weekend!
