The 7 Best Things I Heard Last Week: Wisdom and Reflections

Last week was filled with insightful conversations and thought-provoking ideas that left a lasting impact on me. These seven pieces of advice touched on various aspects of life, from relationships to personal growth. Here’s a deeper dive into these valuable lessons:

1. Wearing Emotions That Don’t Belong to You

“When we are connected to people, we often allow our feelings and connections to them to cause us to wear emotions that don’t belong to us. When we do, we become just as dysfunctional as they are.”

This statement highlights the importance of emotional boundaries. It’s easy to get caught up in others’ emotions and problems, especially when we care deeply about them. However, by absorbing their feelings, we risk losing our sense of self and becoming overwhelmed. It’s crucial to set boundaries and maintain a strong sense of awareness, ensuring that we don’t take on emotions and stress that aren’t ours to bear.

2. Healing is Moving from Problem to Solution

“Healing is moving from problem to solution. Instead of always talking about the problem, treat the symptoms to get to your solution.”

This advice encourages a proactive approach to personal issues. It’s easy to get stuck in a loop of discussing problems without taking steps toward resolution. Healing involves not just identifying the issues but actively seeking solutions and treating the symptoms that arise. By focusing on actionable steps, we can move from a place of pain to a place of healing and growth.

3. No Shortcut to Success

“There is no shortcut to success. When I was younger, my grandmother would scream bloody murder if we cut the yard and walked in the grass. Don’t cut corners.”

This lesson, grounded in a vivid childhood memory, reminds us that shortcuts often lead to subpar results. Success, whether in personal or professional endeavors, requires hard work, dedication, and attention to detail. Cutting corners may save time in the short term, but it often compromises the quality and integrity of the outcome. Embrace the process and commit fully to your goals.

4. The Value of Learning

“What you learn is more important than what you do. The more you know, the better you can be for yourself to grow, learn, and improve.”

This nugget of wisdom emphasizes the importance of continuous learning. While actions are important, the knowledge we acquire along the way equips us to handle future challenges and opportunities more effectively. Prioritizing learning and personal development helps us grow and become more capable, well-rounded individuals.

5. Paying Attention to Yourself

“Nothing pays us like paying attention to us. The more you pay attention to what everyone is doing, the less you have to pay attention to yourself.”

Focusing too much on others can distract us from our own needs and goals. This advice highlights the importance of self-reflection and self-care. By paying attention to ourselves, we reduce unnecessary stress, drama, and anxiety. It’s essential to prioritize our well-being and tune into our thoughts and feelings. 6. The Unappeal of a Bad Attitude

“There is nothing appealing about a bad attitude.”

A bad attitude can negatively impact our relationships, work, and overall quality of life. This reminder encourages us to cultivate a positive and constructive mindset. While everyone has bad days, consistently maintaining a bad attitude can alienate others and hinder personal growth. A positive outlook can open doors and create more fulfilling experiences.

7. Finding Clarity in Space

“Nothing creates clarity like space. If you are feeling uneasy in any way, take a moment to breathe, step away from everything, take a break from the phone, and have as little communication as possible until you feel like yourself again mentally, physically, and emotionally.”

Taking a step back from our daily routines and responsibilities can provide much-needed clarity and perspective. Whether it’s a short break from social media, a day off work, or a quiet moment alone, creating space allows us to reconnect with ourselves. It’s a vital practice for maintaining mental and emotional balance, especially during stressful times.

These seven pieces of advice offer valuable insights into maintaining a healthy mindset, personal growth, and overall well-being. From setting boundaries and focusing on solutions to valuing knowledge and creating space for clarity, these lessons encourage us to live more intentionally and authentically.

As you navigate your own journey, consider how these insights can apply to your life. Reflect on your experiences, set healthy boundaries, and prioritize your well-being. By doing so, you’ll be better equipped to face life’s challenges and embrace its opportunities.

Simple Wellness Tips: How to Begin or Dig Yourself Out of a Slump

We all experience slumps—those periods where life feels overwhelming, our energy is low, and our motivation is nowhere to be found. Whether you’re feeling down mentally, emotionally, financially, or spiritually, the key to getting back on track starts with understanding what you need. Here are some simple wellness tips to help you begin or dig yourself out of a slump and reclaim your sense of peace and balance.

1. Figure Out What You Need

The first step to wellness is identifying what you need to feel whole. This can vary depending on where you are in life and what you’re struggling with. Take a moment to reflect on the different areas of your life:

By understanding what you need in each area, you can begin to take action toward fulfilling those needs, bringing a sense of balance and well-being back into your life.

2. Identify the Triggers

Once you’ve figured out what you need, it’s important to identify the triggers or causes of your slump. Often, our “pesty friend” depression can sneak up on us, driven by unresolved issues, life changes, or external stressors. Take time to reflect and journal on the following:

  • What triggered this slump?
  • Was there a specific event, thought pattern, or situation that led to it?
  • How have you been coping with it so far?

By acknowledging the pain, hurt, insecurities, and anxiety you’re experiencing, you can begin to address these issues head-on. It’s okay to feel these emotions—acknowledging them is the first step toward healing.

3. Acknowledge Your Feelings

One of the most important aspects of wellness is allowing yourself to feel and process your emotions. Bottling up feelings or ignoring them can lead to more significant issues down the road. Here’s how you can begin to acknowledge and work through your emotions:

  • Journal: Write down your thoughts and feelings. Sometimes putting pen to paper can help you make sense of what’s going on inside.
  • Talk: Speak with a trusted friend, family member, or therapist about what you’re experiencing. Sharing your feelings can provide relief and new perspectives.
  • Meditate: Practice mindfulness or meditation to sit with your emotions without judgment. This can help you process your feelings and gain clarity.

Acknowledging your emotions, rather than suppressing them, allows you to move through them and begin healing.

4. Stop Worrying About What Others Think

One of the biggest barriers to wellness is the pressure we put on ourselves to meet others’ expectations. To truly get back to you, it’s essential to stop worrying about what others say, do, or think. Remember:

  • Your Journey is Your Own: Everyone’s path is different, and comparing yourself to others only leads to unnecessary stress. Comparison robs us of our joy, happiness, and peace.
  • Set Boundaries: Protect your energy by setting boundaries with people who drain you or make you feel inadequate. Boundaries are protecting yourself not the other person.
  • Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. It’s okay to take the time you need to heal and grow.

The more comfortable and confident you are in who you are, the more you can create a peaceful life on your own terms.

5. Build Confidence and Comfort in Yourself

Confidence and self-comfort are key components of wellness. When you feel good about who you are and where you’re headed, you’re more resilient to life’s challenges. Here’s how to build that confidence:

When you prioritize your well-being and become more confident in yourself, you create a life that is peaceful, fulfilling, and true to who you are.

Digging yourself out of a slump isn’t easy, but by taking small, intentional steps, you can regain your balance and move forward with renewed strength. Start by figuring out what you need, identifying your triggers, and acknowledging your emotions. Remember to stop worrying about what others think and focus on building confidence and comfort in yourself. These simple wellness tips can guide you toward a more peaceful and fulfilling life, helping you reclaim your sense of self and well-being.

Take a moment today to reflect on your needs and start making changes that support your mental, emotional, financial, and spiritual health. You deserve to live a life that feels whole and balanced.

Celebrating Another Year: Embracing the Gift of Getting Older

Birthdays are truly a gift—an opportunity to celebrate the journey of life, the wisdom we’ve gained, and the experiences that have shaped us. Some aren’t fortunate enough to make it to their next birthday, so each one we get is something to be cherished and embraced. Getting older is something to celebrate, not hide from. Hiding your age? Back to School: The Unofficial End of Summer and a Refresh for Fall

There’s something about the back-to-school season that feels like a reset—a subtle but undeniable signal that summer is winding down, and fall is just around the corner. Even though we technically still have a month or so of summer left, the return to school fast-tracks our excitement for sweater weather, football season, and everything fall yall.

green and gray scissors

As soon as the school buses start rolling and the backpacks come out, it’s like a switch flips. Families have wrapped up their vacations, the lazy days of summer give way to structured schedules, and suddenly, it’s all about fall. Stores don’t waste any time either—they’re already stocked with pumpkin spice everything, cozy blankets, and Halloween decorations. It’s hard not to get caught up in the excitement and start dreaming about crisp air, pumpkin pie lattes, sweaters, boots, and weekend football games.

Back-to-school season is more than just a change in the calendar; it’s a full-on reset. Schedules and routines that took a backseat during the summer months suddenly snap back into focus. Early mornings, homework, packed lunches, and after-school activities all make their return, bringing with them a sense of order and structure that many of us secretly crave after the freedom of summer. Or some may not. For me it’s the endless time spent in the car driving to and from school as well as activities.

For parents and students alike, this time of year feels like a fresh start. It’s a chance to set new goals, get organized, and approach the coming months with renewed energy. Sports practices, clubs, and other extracurricular activities kick into high gear, adding more to the calendar but also creating opportunities for growth and connection.

Of course, while we’re busy getting into the back-to-school groove, it’s hard to ignore the siren call of fall. Stores have already presented us with everything we need to start decorating for the season, and for some of us, it takes a bit of willpower not to dive in headfirst. There’s something about fall that just feels comforting, and once the school year begins, it’s like we’re given permission to start indulging in all the seasonal fun—even if it’s still technically summer.

Who else feels like back-to-school season is a restart or refresh? It’s a time to transition from the relaxed pace of summer to the more structured, goal-oriented mindset of the school year. Whether you’re a student, a parent, or just someone who loves the shift in seasons, back-to-school time offers a chance to refocus, reorganize, and set the tone for the rest of the year. I NEED TO RESET MY EXPECTATIONS

It’s a reminder that change is good, that each season brings its own joys and challenges, and that we can approach this time with excitement rather than dread. So, as we sharpen our pencils and pack those lunchboxes, let’s embrace this reset and look forward to the adventures that fall will bring.

Back-to-school season may mark the unofficial end of summer, but it’s also a time for new beginnings. It’s a chance to reset, refresh, and get excited for what’s to come. Whether you’re ready to break out the fall decor or just trying to savor the last weeks of summer, this time of year offers a unique blend of nostalgia and anticipation.

So, who else feels the shift? Who else is ready for the reset that back-to-school season brings?

5 Things I’d Like to Do More Of: Embracing Positivity and Growth

It’s so easy to get caught up in the cycle of focusing on what we don’t like, what we don’t want, and what we feel we lack. But what if we shifted our mindset? What if we started thinking more about the things we want to do more of, the things that bring us joy and have a positive impact on our lives? This shift in language and focus can open the door to greater happiness, growth, and fulfillment. Here are a few things I’d like to do more of that I believe will enrich my life and well-being.

text on a white surface

1. Read More

One of the first things I’d like to do more of is reading. We all know the benefits of reading—expanding our knowledge, improving our vocabulary, and keeping our minds sharp as we age. Reading also provides a great escape from the daily grind, allowing us to immerse ourselves in different worlds, perspectives, and ideas. As life gets busier, it’s easy to let reading fall by the wayside, but I’m determined to make it a bigger part of my routine. Whether it’s fiction, non-fiction, or even articles and blogs, I want to read more and make time for this self care activity.

2. Improve My Posture

Sitting at a desk all day can take a toll on our posture, and I’ve noticed that I’m not immune to this. Poor posture can lead to a host of issues, from back pain to decreased energy levels. That’s why I’d like to focus more on improving my posture. This means being mindful of how I sit, stand, and move throughout the day. Not only will this help me physically, but it will also contribute to better overall health and well-being. Small adjustments can make a big difference, and I’m committed to making posture improvement a priority.

3. Practice More Yoga and Pilates

Yoga and Pilates are activities I’d like to incorporate more into my routine. These practices are fantastic for stretching muscles, maintaining muscle memory, improving strength, and enhancing flexibility. They’re also great for mental clarity and stress relief. As I get older, I realize the importance of staying active and taking care of my body. By doing more yoga and Pilates, I hope to improve my overall well-being and keep my body strong and healthy. Don’t Wait Until the Weekend to Have Fun: Embrace Joy Every Day

4. Create More Memories and Experiences with Loved Ones

As I get older, I’ve found that experiences and memories with family and friends become far more valuable than material things. I want to focus more on creating those moments—whether it’s through simple get-togethers, travel, or new adventures. These are the memories that last a lifetime, and they’re what truly bring joy to our lives. I’d like to do more of this—more connection, more laughter, more shared experiences.

5. Stay Consistent with My Blog and Self-Care

Lastly, I want to stay consistent with my blog. Writing and sharing my thoughts are important to me, and I’d like to make sure I’m dedicating time to this creative outlet. This includes everything from exercising and eating well to setting aside time for relaxation and reflection. Consistency in these areas will help me maintain peace and balance in my life, ensuring that I’m not just working hard, but also taking the time to enjoy life and take care of what truly matters.

Focusing on the things we want to do more of, rather than what we lack or dislike, can have a positive effect on our lives. By committing to reading more, improving posture, practicing yoga and Pilates, creating meaningful experiences, and staying consistent with my blog and self-care, I’m taking steps toward a more fulfilling and balanced life.

What about you? What would you like to do more of? Let’s begin to shift our language and mindset about embracing positivity and growth in our daily lives. Afterall, we only get one shot at this thing called life.

Embracing the Olympic Spirit: Our Love for the Games

There’s something magical about the Olympics. Every four years (or two if you count the Winter Games!), the world comes together to celebrate the pinnacle of human athleticism, determination, and perseverance. For my husband and me, the Olympics isn’t just a sporting event—it’s a full-blown obsession. We binge-watch it day and night, soaking up every moment of the competition.

gray olympics concrete block

Our favorite events? Oh, we have quite a few! Swimming, gymnastics, and track and field are always at the top of our list. And track and field? The sheer speed and endurance of those athletes leave us in awe every single time.

The Olympics is also a time when we dive into sports we might not normally watch. Fencing? Absolutely! Beach volleyball? Always exciting, keeps you on the edge of your seats. Rowing? Will have you rowing your imaginary boat on the couch! Equestrian events? Yup, lets ride that horse ! There’s something so fascinating about these sports, and the Olympics gives us the perfect excuse to explore them. It’s amazing to see athletes compete at such a high level in sports we’re not as familiar with—it broadens our horizons and makes us appreciate the diversity of athletic talent around the world.

And let’s not forget the opening ceremony! Who else finds themselves looking up countries they’ve never heard of just to learn more about them? We do! The parade of nations is like a mini geography and culture lesson. We get curious about the flags, the languages, the history—everything! The Olympics has this incredible ability to make you think outside the box and embrace cultures and people you might not normally encounter.

It’s a reminder that, despite our differences, we’re all part of the same global community, united by a love of sport and competition.

One of the most fun parts of watching the Olympics is cheering for athletes and teams we might never have watched otherwise. Whether it’s an underdog story or a competitor from a small nation, there’s something special about rooting for someone who isn’t a household name. The Olympics teaches us to appreciate the effort, dedication, and passion that goes into competing at this level, no matter where the athlete comes from or what sport they’re in.

But oh, the sadness when the Olympics is over! After weeks of nonstop action, it’s always a little bittersweet to say goodbye to the games. We’ll miss the excitement, the stories, and the inspiration that the Olympics brings. But we take with us a renewed sense of motivation—seeing these athletes push themselves to the limit reminds us that with hard work and dedication, we too can achieve great things.

The Olympics is more than just a series of competitions; it’s a celebration of the human spirit. It’s about pushing boundaries, overcoming obstacles, and striving for excellence. For my husband and me, it’s also a chance to explore new sports, learn about different cultures, and experience the world through the eyes of the athletes.

Who else has been glued to the screen during the Olympics? What events do you love? What motivation have you drawn from watching these incredible athletes? And who else is going to be a little sad when it’s all over?

8 Best Mental Health Reminders and Tips I Heard This Week

Mental health is a crucial aspect of our overall well-being, and it’s always enlightening to come across reminders and tips that help us navigate life’s challenges. Here are eight mental health tips I encountered this week that stuck deeply with me. Each one offers valuable insight into how we can better take care of our minds and hearts.

white blocks with letters on red background

1. Spend Less Time Defending Who You Are and More Time Being You

One of the most liberating aspects of growth and maturity is realizing that you don’t have to respond to everything. Spend less time defending who you are and more time simply being yourself. Embrace your true self, and let your actions speak louder than words. This mindset not only reduces stress but also allows you to live more authentically and confidently.

2. Avoid Mixed Signals: Value Effort Consistently

When you allow people to mix good effort with bad effort, you end up with mixed signals. It’s important to recognize and value consistent, positive effort in relationships and interactions. This clarity helps build stronger, healthier connections and ensures that you’re surrounded by people who genuinely care and contribute positively to your life.

3. Your Response in Hard Times Reflects Your True Self

Your response during difficult times reveals a lot about your personality. If you want to understand where you need healing or growth, start by examining how you react under stress. Are you calm, resilient, or easily overwhelmed? Identifying these patterns can guide you in addressing areas that need attention and improvement. 10 MENTAL HEALTH REMINDERS

4. It’s Okay Not to Know All the Answers

It’s perfectly fine to admit when you don’t have all the answers. Saying “I don’t know” and asking for help is far better than pretending to know and causing potential harm. Embracing this humility fosters a learning mindset and opens you up to growth and new perspectives.

5. Don’t Let Social Media Fool You

Social media can be deceptive. It’s easy to “look” happy online, but true happiness doesn’t have a look; it comes from within. Don’t let the curated lives you see on social media make you doubt your own happiness. Focus on your inner well-being and find joy in your own journey.

6. Boundaries Are Tools, Not Weapons

Boundaries are essential for healthy relationships, but they should be used as tools for self-care, not as weapons to control or manipulate others. Establishing boundaries helps protect your mental health and fosters respect and understanding. Use them wisely to create a supportive and nurturing environment for yourself and those around you.

7. The Real Flex is Being Your Authentic Self

In a world full of comparisons and superficial “flexing” on social media, the real flex is being your authentic self. Finding the courage to embrace who you truly are is empowering. It allows you to live a more genuine life, free from the pressure of trying to meet others’ expectations.

8. Some Blessings Are Disguised as Setbacks

Not all setbacks are what they seem. Some blessings come disguised as heartache. Don’t be too quick to judge a situation or make an emotional decision that could cause you to miss an opportunity for growth and healing. Sometimes, what feels like a loss can turn into a significant blessing in disguise, leading to profound personal development.

These mental health reminders and tips offer powerful insights into how we can lead more fulfilling lives. By embracing our true selves, valuing consistent effort, understanding our responses in tough times, admitting when we don’t have all the answers, seeing beyond social media facades, using boundaries wisely, being authentic, and recognizing hidden blessings, we can significantly improve our mental well-being.

Take these reminders to heart and see how they can positively impact your life. Remember, mental health is a journey, and every step you take towards understanding and caring for yourself is a step towards a healthier, happier you.

Navigating Anticipatory Anxiety: A Family Vacation Story

Here we go, family vacations—a delightful mix of excitement, bonding, and, if you’re anything like me, a healthy dose of anticipatory anxiety. I’m about to embark on a trip with my brother and mom. I agreed primarily because my brother really wants me there, and spending quality time with family is self care. But as the weekend date nears, my brain has been running non-stop scenarios about how the trip “will” go down.

teal fujifilm instax mini camera near white ceramic mug

It’s no secret that my mom and I have an, lets say, interesting relationship. She adores my brother and often makes it clear in ways that can poke at our sibling dynamics. So naturally, I’ve been imagining all the conversations and interactions that are sure to happen. It’s like having a Netflix binge-watch marathon in my head, only with way more drama and fewer commercial breaks.

Just as I was spiraling into a mental shutdown, like about to cancel, I stumbled upon the term “anticipatory anxiety.” Bingo! That’s exactly what I’ve been experiencing. Anticipatory anxiety is that nagging worry about future events, fearing that things may go wrong or that you won’t be able to handle what comes your way. Basically, it’s stressing out about stressing out.

Here’s the funny thing: I was having anticipatory anxiety about a vacation! A VACATION. The one time you’re supposed to relax and have fun. It suddenly clicked—I was more worried about what could go wrong than focusing on the potential for a good time. My mother may just decide to be on her best behavior. After all my brother will be there, and she doesn’t say her snarky comments, or be passive aggressive in front of him. She must appear perfect to him.

So, I had a little pep talk with myself: “Get over yourself. Go have a good time. Let her be. Set boundaries if needed, but don’t let your fears, anxiety , and mother for goodness sake ruin what could be a great trip.” I still can have my boundaries that I’ve set in place no matter how close in quarters we are.

Set Boundaries:
Even on vacation, it’s okay to set boundaries. If mom starts to poke, I know how to shut it down at the onset. Leave the room or get in my car and go. And lastly, my favorite, completely ignore and block her out. WELLNESS: EVEN THE STRONGEST NEEDS A BREAK

Stay Present:
Try to focus on the moment rather than what might happen. Enjoy the scenery, the activities, and the quality time with your brother. My main concern is supporting my brother at his event.

Humor Helps:
Find the humor in the situation. Laugh at the absurdity of it all—after all, family dynamics can be pretty entertaining when you take a step back. In doing my healing, I know that she has unhealed trauma. So that allows me to give her some empathy.

Self-Care:
Don’t forget to take care of yourself. Whether it’s a quiet walk, a good book, or a quick meditation session, make time for things that help you relax. Not to mention I’ve got pretty good at zoning out to center myself in a room full of people.

So, here’s to the upcoming trip! I’ve decided to embrace the adventure, anticipatory anxiety and all. After all, vacations are meant to be an escape from our daily worries, not an extension of them.

Wish me luck, and if you see me laughing in the corner, just know I’m probably finding the humor in my own overactive imagination. Lastly, I’m anxious to see just how far I’ve come in this healing journey. How I navigate this will let me know where to put in more work. Here’s to a fun-filled, boundary-setting, anxiety-busting family vacation!
