Navigating Fall: Sweaters and Sandals Journey

The last time I checked, it’s fall, right? October has arrived, pumpkin spice is everywhere, and we’re seeing all the cozy sweaters in stores… but the weather? Upper 70s and low 80s! Is it just me, or does this fall weather feel like a sneaky reminder that the seasons don’t operate by the fashion calendar?

Now, maybe it’s my age or the fact that I grew up in the Windy City, where the slightest hint of fall means we’re pulling out the layers and retiring the flip flops to the back of the closet. In Chicago, when September hits, when I was growing up, there’s a mental shift. Sweaters, boots, scarves—the whole wardrobe rotation goes into effect. But now, living in a place where “white Christmas” is more of a memory than a reality, I’m seeing folks rocking shorts and flip-flops like summer never ended! I get it—if you don’t need to own a snow shovel, why not keep those sandals handy?

But here’s the thing: I’m ready for sweater weather. Or shall I say the calendar tells me it’s sweater weather. Mentally, emotionally, and physically , I’ve transitioned into fall. I want that crisp air and those cozy layers, especially now that it’s October! In the mornings, I bundle up in a sweater, but by noon, I’m sweating bullets and wondering if I should have left one layer at home. None the less, the kids are heading to school ready for any kind of weather. It’s sweater weather at 8 a.m. but feels like beach day by lunchtime.

I know there are places in the world where summer clothes are a year-round vibe—and that’s amazing. But there’s something about this transitional weirdness that feels off to me. Maybe it’s my subconscious refusing to mix the seasons. It’s like my brain needs to put a period at the end of one season before starting the next. None of this summer-fall hybrid stuff! In my mind, it’s all or nothing: either we’re bundled up, sipping hot cocoa, and lighting pumpkin candles, or we’re fully in sundresses and iced tea mode. None of this halfway stuff. Monday Humor: Enjoy the Moment – It’s Still Summer!

I guess it’s sort of like life—sometimes, we feel like we need to completely close one door before we can confidently open the next. Maybe this weather is just a reminder that transitions aren’t always so neat and tidy. Sometimes, you have to live in the in-between for a bit—mixing sweaters with sandals, just like mixing old habits with new beginnings.

But I’ll tell you one thing: when that cool breeze finally does settle in for good, you’d better believe I’m going all in on the fall aesthetic—cozy sweaters, warm drinks, and ALL the fall feels. Until then, I guess I’ll just have to keep sweating through my flannel by noon and rocking that weird seasonal combo. Just like life, we ride the in between until we fully make it to the other side. Happy Fall Y’all!

HELLO SEPTEMBER

Yup, it’s September 1, 2023. Where has the time gone? For some September is about pumpkin spice latte’s, apple cider, fall festivals, pumpkin patch visits, and my favorite, decor. However, September is exciting because football is back, a plethora of new fall TV shows, and back to school. Lastly, who doesn’t love fall fashion? Fall can be the best time of year for fashion. You get to wear sweaters, boots, layer, and get creative.

While all of that is exciting and great entertainment, September reminds us that the end of the year is quickly approaching. Some stress over Christmas holiday shopping, have they reached their goals, and what are they going to before the clock strikes midnight on December 31. You’ll probably going to see an increase of content on what to do these last couple of months to achieve your goals. How to set yourself up for next year. Or, you should already be thinking about next year. Either way it can be stressful.

Please remember that it’s great content to keep you motivated, on track, and getting your juices flowing for your life. However, consuming the content without filters can cause some to feel like they aren’t doing enough, they have failed at their goals, it’s too late, times running out, or they aren’t working hard enough. When it comes to consuming that information, take the tips and tricks that apply to your lifestyle and create realistic systems and goals to live your life. Leave the rest.

As we say hello September, think about what you need to feel free and light. Just like the leaves fall for the season, what do you need to get rid of that isn’t serving you. If you’ve been stressing over the same thing for months, nothing has changed, let if fall with the leaves. You’ve tried something and it wasn’t what you thought, OH WELL, you tried. Take the good lessons you learned from it, and move on to something else. Get rid of what you need to sleep, rest, and have peace at the end of each day. 7 HEALING JOURNAL PROMPTS FOR A PEACEFUL WEEK

With our hello this month, we’re going to see some new colors bring life to nature. That’s our hint to add some color and life into our daily routine. If you haven’t been one to attend a fall festival find one close to you to visit. Have you been apple picking, to a pumpkin patch (yes we plan to go this year even though my kids are teenagers), or an hayride. The goal here is to find something local, free or close to free, do something that you never done, and explore.

This is a trick I started last year and have enjoyed. This summer we stopped by our local Ford Enthusiast festival that is held every year, but have never went. They had food, live bands, games, and endless Ford cars displayed for one weekend. We had a blast. All it takes is to try.

Say hello to September. Enjoy your lattes, soups, chili’s, and cobblers. Get comfy cozy in your favorite sweaters and live colorful. Your heart, mind, and body will reward you.

DIY…Starbucks Medicine Ball

Ok, I have a guilty pleasure of going to Starbucks. DIY…Starbucks medicine ball is my current recipe to replicate. However, I do know it can be an expensive habit and I get a rush on figuring out ways to make my favorite drink at home. One of my favorite drinks is the Honey Citrus Mint Tea aka the medicine ball.

This is advertised as an high in vitamin c drink that supposed to boost your immune system through the cold and flu season. Does it help with boosting your immune system or get over a cold, that remains to be proven. However, the only thing I do know, is this drink on a brisk fall morning or an evening night cap drink is a must try.

The ingredients are very simple. The recipe for a Grande, which is 16oz, calls for half hot water and half steamed lemonade. So 8oz of hot water to 8oz of steamed lemonade. Then two flavors of tea are Jade Citrus Mint and Peach Tranquility and a packet of honey which measures about 1 teaspoon.

The blend of the citrus and mint along with the honey is very soothing to the throat even if you don’t have a sore throat. Late in the evening before bed, it opens your sinuses while giving you a relaxed calming energy.

The last two weeks I have divulged in tea while creating many recipes of my own with a twist. My at home recipe consists of the following:

DIY…Starbucks Medicine Ball

-1 Cup of the Simply Lemonade (I’ve experimented with regular and light and they both taste amazing.) (https://amzn.to/3npX9Q4)
-1 Cup of hot water not boiling
-1 Tea Bag of Peppermint tea https://amzn.to/3pz8FKX
-1 Tea Bag of the Citrus Sunrise https://amzn.to/38PPWoj
-1 Tea spoon of honey (https://amzn.to/2ID0TPi)

Preparation:

Start by placing the one cup of water and one cup of lemonade into a small pot and bring to a steam. Just as soon as it begins to come to a boil take it off.

Next, pour mixture into mug with both tea bags. Let it steep for about 2-3 minutes. Add one teaspoon of honey, stir , and its ready to sip.

Total prep and cook time, 10 minutes.
I have loved and enjoyed my evening with this drink. The most fun though, has been playing around with different mixtures and flavors of tea.

Some others mixtures I’ve tried for the DIY…Starbucks Medicine Ball is:
-Mint Honey and Lemon Ginseng Tea (https://amzn.to/2H3GKBe) – one peppermint and one honey lemon ginseng tea bag each
-Citrus Honey and Lemon Ginseng Tea-one citrus sunrise tea bag and one honey lemon ginseng tea bag
-Double Mint Lemondage tea-2 peppermint tea bags
-Black Citrus (https://amzn.to/3f4jP5s) tea in the morning- one black tea bag and one citrus sunrise tea bag
-Black Mint Awakening tea- one black tea bag and one peppermint tea bag.
**
All mixtures are made with the same one cup of hot water and one cup of lemonade with the teaspoon of honey.

As you can see I have experimented quite a bit and found some great soothing indulgence for morning, noon, and night. Any of the above mentioned mixtures can be enjoyed anytime of the day.
