The Fun (Not-So-Fun) Side of Being Over 40: Perimenopause Symptoms No One Talks About 😅

Let me just say it: perimenopause is WILD. No one warned me that mid 40’s was basically an all-access pass to a theme park of bizarre, confusing, and downright annoying symptoms that no one talks about. Sure, we hear about hot flashes and mood swings—but what about the rest of the fun? You know, like the brain fog so thick you forget why you walked into a room… or how joint pain shows up like an uninvited guest to the party? Oh, and let’s not forget about the head-spinning, stomach-churning dizziness and vertigo that has you grabbing for the nearest wall like you just stepped off a rollercoaster.

Here’s the full list of party favors I’ve been handed by perimenopause:

  • Brain Fog: Can’t remember where I put my keys? Or my car? Or what day it is? Welcome to the club!
  • Vertigo with Dizziness/Lightheadedness: I bend down to pick up something, and BAM—instant amusement park ride.
  • Joint Pain: Because apparently, my toes of all things are 70 years old even though I’m only 40+?
  • Dry Skin Patches: Who needs winter when you have dry skin patches all year round? Lotion has become my best friend.
  • Headaches: Perimenopause decided to give me a headache for free, with no expiration date.
  • Insomnia: Let’s stay awake all night and stare at the ceiling—sounds like a plan, right?
  • Hearing Problems: Is it just me, or is everyone whispering lately? I didn’t sign up for this silent movie experience.
  • Blurred Vision: Am I staring into a Monet painting or just trying to read my phone?
  • Anxiety: As if brain fog and dizziness weren’t enough, here comes anxiety to crash the party.

Yup, this is what my 40’s has given me. 🎉 And I’m trying to find the humor in it all.

But you know what? Even though perimenopause has handed me this grab bag of weird symptoms, it’s also inspired me to listen to my body in a whole new way. I’m now more intentional about understanding what my body needs and practicing self-care (aka, lots of naps, stretching, and treating myself to fancy lotions because I’m worth it). I’ve embraced this stage with grace—well, mostly grace and sometimes a little frustration—but hey, we’re all figuring it out! SELF CARE IS A LIFESTYLE

Ladies, if you’re feeling these symptoms too, just know you’re not alone. We’ve got this! Let’s laugh through the chaos and take care of ourselves along the way. 💪

DIY…Starbucks Medicine Ball

Ok, I have a guilty pleasure of going to Starbucks. DIY…Starbucks medicine ball is my current recipe to replicate. However, I do know it can be an expensive habit and I get a rush on figuring out ways to make my favorite drink at home. One of my favorite drinks is the Honey Citrus Mint Tea aka the medicine ball.

This is advertised as an high in vitamin c drink that supposed to boost your immune system through the cold and flu season. Does it help with boosting your immune system or get over a cold, that remains to be proven. However, the only thing I do know, is this drink on a brisk fall morning or an evening night cap drink is a must try.

The ingredients are very simple. The recipe for a Grande, which is 16oz, calls for half hot water and half steamed lemonade. So 8oz of hot water to 8oz of steamed lemonade. Then two flavors of tea are Jade Citrus Mint and Peach Tranquility and a packet of honey which measures about 1 teaspoon.

The blend of the citrus and mint along with the honey is very soothing to the throat even if you don’t have a sore throat. Late in the evening before bed, it opens your sinuses while giving you a relaxed calming energy.

The last two weeks I have divulged in tea while creating many recipes of my own with a twist. My at home recipe consists of the following:

DIY…Starbucks Medicine Ball

-1 Cup of the Simply Lemonade (I’ve experimented with regular and light and they both taste amazing.) (https://amzn.to/3npX9Q4)
-1 Cup of hot water not boiling
-1 Tea Bag of Peppermint tea https://amzn.to/3pz8FKX
-1 Tea Bag of the Citrus Sunrise https://amzn.to/38PPWoj
-1 Tea spoon of honey (https://amzn.to/2ID0TPi)

Preparation:

Start by placing the one cup of water and one cup of lemonade into a small pot and bring to a steam. Just as soon as it begins to come to a boil take it off.

Next, pour mixture into mug with both tea bags. Let it steep for about 2-3 minutes. Add one teaspoon of honey, stir , and its ready to sip.

Total prep and cook time, 10 minutes.
I have loved and enjoyed my evening with this drink. The most fun though, has been playing around with different mixtures and flavors of tea.

Some others mixtures I’ve tried for the DIY…Starbucks Medicine Ball is:
-Mint Honey and Lemon Ginseng Tea (https://amzn.to/2H3GKBe) – one peppermint and one honey lemon ginseng tea bag each
-Citrus Honey and Lemon Ginseng Tea-one citrus sunrise tea bag and one honey lemon ginseng tea bag
-Double Mint Lemondage tea-2 peppermint tea bags
-Black Citrus (https://amzn.to/3f4jP5s) tea in the morning- one black tea bag and one citrus sunrise tea bag
-Black Mint Awakening tea- one black tea bag and one peppermint tea bag.
**
All mixtures are made with the same one cup of hot water and one cup of lemonade with the teaspoon of honey.

As you can see I have experimented quite a bit and found some great soothing indulgence for morning, noon, and night. Any of the above mentioned mixtures can be enjoyed anytime of the day.

Random Fun Fact About Me

I love collecting coffee mugs. Big mugs, small mugs, colorful mugs, inspirational mugs, and homemade mugs by my children are the best. When I drink coffee or tea in one of my mugs, I place myself on a balcony listening to the birds chirping straining my eyes to see through the dense fog creating my photo of the day. Sip, dream, imagine, and visualizing where I want to go, what I want to do, and how I’m going to make it happen. Depending on my mood, I may a choose one of my inspirational mugs that will give me a reminder throughout the day to keep myself motivated, choosing my “Mrs.” mug means I’m loving on my husband throughout the day, and when I choose a sassy mug I’m feeling a red lipstick day coming.
